On Sunday, April 21, 2024, UPF President Bjarni Randver Sigurvinsson from the National Church of Iceland awarded Thorunn Helgadóttir and her husband Samuel Lusiru Gona the title of Ambassadors of Peace in Iceland’s growing chapter.

In 2006, the couple began projects in Nairobi and later in the countryside (on the lands of the famous Masai in Masai Mara). These included the construction of schools, especially for girls escaping child marriage and female circumcision, where they could receive an education, shelter and a career.

Sponsors from Iceland and the Faroe Islands support the project, paying teachers’ salaries, school fees, students' uniforms, etc.

Earlier, Indian-born Prof. Shilpa Khatri Babbar and a young, enthusiastic Icelander were also awarded the title of Ambassador of Peace.

Prof. Khatri Babbar, who introduced a broader scope of Indian culture to the Icelandic population and whose teaching term was scheduled to end this summer, received an extension for another year here in Iceland. Sacrificing her family life in India, she continues to be a bridge between cultures.

On 5 May 2024, a meeting will be held in Iceland, introducing UPF’s underlying peace ideology.

Understanding history leads to a better understanding of how to view the present and find solutions for actual problems. The theme will be the “Theory of History - a comprehensive view on laws guiding past, present and future,” and the focus will be on the internal aspects that enable us to maintain inner peace, the basis for family and societal peace, which can extend into the nation and world.
