Interfaith Council Meeting  -  Reykjavik: 01/02/2024

In the beginning of February, the Catholic Church kindly offered the use of its parish premises for the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) to organise an interfaith council meeting which was attended by members of various different faiths and denominations.  Present were representatives from the National Lutheran Church; the Roman Catholic Church; the Free Lutheran Church; the Soka Gakai Community; the Bahai Community and UPF.  Also attending were representatives from the main religions of Finland – the Orthodox Church and the Lutheran Church.  The conference centred mainly on matters of religious cooperation which were possible between the two countries and beneficial to all their communities.

The first such meeting of its kind, experiences of a religious and social nature were compared.  Everyone discovered that they shared the same challenges where the government was concerned.  They also had similar serious problems of the growing unawareness of Christian values.  This is called Christian Illiteracy.  It is the result of banning the teaching of Religion at schools and having it removed as a subject from the curriculum.

Educating Peace Ambassadors  -  Reykjavik: 04/02/2024

On 3rd February, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) held a symposium to coincide with the United Nations World Interfaith Harmony week.  Attending were Ambassadors for Peace, Professor of Sociology, Prof. Dr. Shilpa Khatri Babbar, and other dignitaries.  The aim was to enlighten those present about the investment UPF has made towards achieving peace in the Middle East.

Working with its Middle East Peace Initiative (MEPI), it organised several interfaith pilgrimages to Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Here, Christian Priests, Jewish Rabbis and Islamic Imams held hands, prayed, sang and walked together, leading those taking part in a peace walk through the streets of Jerusalem.

Towards the end of the event, Prof. Dr. Shilpa Khatri Babbar was presented with the Ambassador for Peace Award for Academicians.
