UPF Czech Republic organized a series of three lectures on democracy focusing on the main pillars of the democratic system. The first lecture was focused on the basic principes of democracy as such. The lecture took place on October 25, 2023, at the Peace Embassy in Prague. The main speaker was Dr. Roman Joch, director of the Civic Institute in Prague.

In his lecture on "The Twilight of Democracy," Dr. Roman Joch emphasized the importance of democracy as a political system that brought freedom, the free market and plurality of opinion to the people.

However, he also drew attention to the existing problems and limitations of democracy today. He began by recalling the beginnings of democracy and by mentioning ancient philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato, who pondered the various forms of democracy and its risks.

Dr. Joch suggested that democracy has historically been considered one of the best possible forms of government, but today faces a number of challenges. However, he stressed that it still has qualities and that we should rather look for ways to strengthen it and adapt it to the current challenges. Overall, in his lecture, he highlighted the importance of democracy, but also the need for it to be constantly improved to effectively address current political and societal challenges.
