Intervention of H.E. Alfred Moisiu in the youth session at the April 2022 Balkans Leadership Conference

Speech by President Alfred Moisiu at the youth session "Youth and the future of the Balkans", April 2, 2022

Distinguished Presidents,

Honorable Mayor of Tirana,

Dear young people participating in this important event,

It is a privilege for me as the "youngest" to greet you here and thank you for being part of this important gathering.

Everyone commonly says that the future belongs to the youth, and this is true, but very little is done to involve young people properly and adequately in the important processes of the country's development. Young people should be involved in all areas of life, not only as active participants, but also by being entrusted with leadership responsibilities, so that the maturity and experience of adults are naturally intertwined with the dynamism and creativity of young people.

The work that has been done recently in Tirana is to be welcomed and the fact that Tirana has been chosen as the European capital of youth for this year should be appreciated, and this opportunity should be used properly.

We know that big changes occurred whenever young people were involved, because the energy of youth is powerful, inspiring, and when things go wrong it becomes revolutionary.

I am convinced that the youth should be trusted more. Trust in the youth should definitely be restored, because with the policies that have been pursued so far, the youth of the Balkan countries rightly see no hope for the future here, so they have fled and are continuing to flee west.

The leaders of our countries need to reflect on this and take action. In order for the future of our region to be secure for future generations, young people need to feel valued, feel equal to the young people of Europe, and that their potential can flourish, because the truth is that our region is rich, beautiful and has tremendous potential.

Thanking you once again, I wish you success!

Thank you!
