On 8 December 2023, UPF Düsseldorf met to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. We exchanged thoughts on this important topic in a cosy atmosphere with coffee and cake. Despite the wet and cold weather, we first took to the streets to talk to people about this topic.
Anja Brina had a fascinating conversation with a young woman who considered freedom of expression to be particularly important. In her opinion, this freedom is the basis for open dialogue and individual development. A further interesting discussion took place with a young man, who, when asked his opinion as to what progress had been made since the adoption of human rights 75 years ago, explained that although there had certainly been some progress, there was still a long way to go in view of continuing discrimination and injustice. He also stressed the importance of individual responsibility for the protection of human rights.
After these encounters we were relieved to return to the warmth where Sergio Brina gave a talk about human rights. He emphasised that human rights as we know them, are not only the result of laws and international agreements but are also based on deep spiritual principles which are anchored in the heart and conscience of every person. This spiritual dimension reminds us that we are not only physical beings but that we also have a soul and spirit. This statement led to a stimulating discussion and many differing perspectives and insights were expressed by members of the group.
