Mikulčice, Czech Republic—A team of volunteers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia spent two days helping a village that was nearly destroyed by a tornado.

In June, the tornado tore through Mikulčice and six nearby villages in the South Moravian Region, killing six people and injuring over 200. In Mikulčice, 300 houses were destroyed.

Fourteen UPF volunteers worked in the village from October 15 to 16, 2021. The service project was organized by the Czech chapter of UPF and the Czech and Slovak chapters of Youth and Students for Peace (YSP), an affiliated organization.

This project was a follow-up to a successful “Peace Road” event between Czech Republic and Slovakia in this area in August.

Volunteers both young and old came to help the people in the village. With a young spirit, empathy and solidarity, they carried heavy concrete panels, cleaned, mixed concrete, and did many other kinds of labor.

The participants were greeted by the mayor of the village, who appreciated their help and determination to work in the humble conditions that the village could offer.

We hope that this project will inspire other people to help in situations in which help and solidarity are needed.
