Despite the two wars now raging in the Europe and Middle East region, people still hope ‘‘to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war’’ (United Nations Preamble). Hence, UPF and Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP), an affiliated organization, in France hosted a symposium on the theme:

‘‘All men become brethren’’

This title was chosen to honor the 200th anniversary of the creation of Beethoven’s ninth symphony in 1824. It’s famous for the Ode to Joy which says,

Thy magic binds again
What custom strictly divided;
All people become brethren
Where thy gentle wing abides.

The event, which took place in the Paris Peace embassy on Saturday, June 8, 2024, also celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings (June 6, 1944), where the Allied Forces joined together to defeat the Nazi regime occupying France. Finally, the Olympic games will soon take place in Paris.

The archetype for humankind’s unending history of struggle, war and conflict

Why do people fight and kill one another? For Reverend Moon, the founder of UPF and WFWP, ‘‘the biblical account of Cain and Abel in Adam’s family (…) provides the archetype for humankind’s unending history of struggle, war and conflict.’’

Psychologist Gérard Haddad wrote a book on the complex of Cain. Pope Francis often speaks of Cain and Abel. But who, exactly, are Cain and Abel? Axel Huard explained in detail why Cain murdered Abel, and why, on the contrary, Jacob established a model of reconciliation with Esau.

Two loves built two cities

Two loves built who cities, says Augustine in the City of God. Human love built the city of man, based on Cain’s values, while the city of God embraces Abel’s values. In the following presentation, Didier Guignard explored the rise of the Abel-type worldview (Hebraism), which gave birth to Abel type democracies and the rise of the Cain-type worldview (Hellenism), which gave birth to Cain type democracies.

A fraternal banquet followed the morning sessions. M. Cheikh Amadou Ba, president of the National Council of Imams in France, was appointed as an ambassador for peace.

Switzerland’s neutrality and direct democracy on trial

The afternoon session focused on Switzerland. Laurent Ladouce explained the roots of the Swiss model of governance, in light of the ideals of interdependence, mutual prosperity and universal values. M. Jean-Pierre Vettovaglia, former ambassador of Switzerland to the Francophone countries, warned us to be realistic. “We don’t live in a world of “Care Bears”. The neutrality of Switzerland and its democracy are under attack nowadays.”

The debate was followed by a cordial reception during which the ambassador listened to the African delegates and gave them the benefit of his own insights, based on his experience in diplomacy and business.
