On 13 May 2024, the Interreligious Prayer Circle of UPF Düsseldorf held an event entitled: the Meaning of Pentecost and Ascension Day. Pastor Edna Nana Noupa introduced the topic and explained the deep meaning of these two important Christian holidays.

Forty days after Easter, Christians celebrate Ascension Day. According to the biblical narrative, Jesus led his disciples to the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, blessed them, and was then lifted into heaven before their eyes. Pastor Noupa explained that Ascension Day illustrates Jesus ‘s return to his Father in Heaven, and at the same time conveys the certainty that He has not abandoned mankind but continues to be near.

Pentecost is celebrated by Christians fifty days after Easter. On this day, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus as described in the book of Acts, is commemorated. Pastor Noupa explained that the Holy Spirit gave the disciples strength, courage, and the ability to speak in different languages, in order to carry the message of the gospel to the world. She stressed that the Holy Spirit still to this day gives the faithful strength, inspiration, guidance and fortifies their faith.

After the presentation, several questions were raised, one of which was whether one can feel the Holy Spirit. Pastor Noupa said that she often feels tingling, warmth, enthusiasm, joy and a deep peace. She emphasised however, that those who do not have such experiences can be sure that anyone who asks God, will receive the Holy Spirit.

Then followed a period of silence, during which prayers for world peace were offered in turn. This was a very moving experience for all. The event ended with time for further discussion over refreshments.
