H.E. Delfim Santiago das Neves, President, National Assembly, São Tomé and Príncipe

Delfim Santiago das Neves graduated in international business from the University of the South in Santa Catarina, Brazil. H.E. Delfim Santiago das Neves has been the President of the National Assembly, Republic of Sao Tome and Principe since November 2018. Previously, he held several high positions of responsibility in the administration. He is a peacebuilder and pacifist very involved in the economic development of his country. He has contributed, by his pragmatism and his ideas, to the renewal of São Tomé and Príncipe, through the political networks and to the associations of civil society to which he belongs.

First of all, I would like to greet all fellow speakers, particularly my counterparts, to also greet the honorable moderator and all those who are accompanying us in this important virtual conference.

It constitutes for me, as President of the National Assembly of São Tomé and Príncipe, a reason of great pride to participate, as Honorary Keynote Speaker, in this International Leadership Conference, reason for which I express my sincere thanks to the Universal Peace Federation under the leadership of Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, for such a relevant invitation.

Allow me to begin by considering the theme of this meeting, which arises under the impulse of a time marked by incongruities and frustrations of various kinds, in particular those resulting from the effects of a pandemic that, despite the combat that is being unleashed against it by most communities worldwide, has been spreading almost unremittingly, reaching many countries, in its second phase, in proportions that arouse, in our view, true fear from the point of view of its consequences for human survival.

In the face of such a serious situation, it is urgent that we look at the world economy, deeply stricken by the effects of the aforementioned pandemic, especially in low-income countries, which run the risk of being submerged if there do not prevail in the international community, the values of understanding, harmony, freedom, cooperation and peace.

As far as Africa is concerned, a continent that has emerged in the struggle for the prosperity of its people, largely resulting from centuries of dominance and exploitation by the unrelenting interests of others, there is a wide path of opportunities and hope in with which people live together. New generations are coming, aware that only in the context of democracy, human rights, development and social justice will the future so eagerly desired be able to take shape and assume the sought-after success.

For this reason, it is at a very good time that the Universal Peace Federation, attentive to the complex problems that humanity now faces, bets on the realization of this conference, faithful as always to its aim of creating opportunities for dialogue, tending toward “building peace between government, religious, cultural, educational and civil society representatives, all operating together, based on mutual respect and a shared commitment to cooperation and good government ”.

Thank you.
