Building a Culture of Peace Through Dialogue

Copenhagen, 4 July 2026 -Following the successful launch of its monthly peace lecture and dialogue series earlier this year, UPF Denmark has continued the program throughout the spring with growing participation and enthusiastic engagement. The series has now developed into a regular forum where both returning participants and newcomers explore peace, values and responsibility through lectures, reflection and dialogue.

Held on the last Monday evening of each month, the gatherings have attracted between 15 and 25 participants, including both Ambassadors for Peace and new guests. The continuity has helped build trust and openness within the group, while the arrival of new participants has brought fresh perspectives to every meeting.

Each evening begins with a presentation by Dr. Thorkil Christensen, followed by small-group discussions based on four carefully prepared questions related to the evening's theme. These conversations have become a central part of the program, creating an atmosphere of openness, respect and lively participation where everyone is encouraged to contribute their own experiences and perspectives.

The March session, "The Deeper Roots of Conflict," explored how conflicts arise not only between nations and groups but also within the human heart through competing desires, values and choices. Participants reflected on how greater self-regulation, a stronger sense of conscience and personal responsibility can help break cycles of conflict and contribute to peace in society.

In April, the theme "Sport, Art and Religion in the Service of Peace" explored how these three powerful dimensions of human life can help shape character, open hearts and build bridges between people. Participants reflected on their shared potential to foster respect, compassion and peaceful coexistence when guided by universal values.

The May meeting, "The Power of Unity," explored how genuine unity grows through trust, shared purpose, mutual responsibility and respect for diversity. Participants reflected on how such unity is more than simply being together—it releases a creative force that enables both individuals and society to flourish.

The spring series concluded in June with "Universal Values in a Divided World." Participants reflected on how universal values become meaningful only when they are lived in everyday life. They are nurtured in families, expressed through our actions and relationships, and rooted in the shared human longing for truth, love, dignity and peace.

As the series continues, it is becoming increasingly evident that many people are looking for places where important questions about values, meaning and peaceful coexistence can be explored in an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect. Through education, dialogue and shared reflection, UPF Denmark hopes this initiative will continue to contribute to building a culture of peace.
