For the second consecutive year, the Universal Peace Federation–Portugal (UPF) was invited by Odivelas City Council to participate in an initiative dedicated to promoting interreligious dialogue within the municipality. This ongoing effort takes the form of a podcast, designed to highlight the diverse religious communities present in the area and to encourage greater integration, mutual understanding, and social harmony.
Although UPF is not itself a religious community, it has long been a trusted partner of Odivelas City Council in the field of interfaith harmony and diversity integration. Through its consistent involvement and commitment, UPF has become a key contributor to municipal initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence among communities. Its participation in these activities reflects its broader mission to serve as a bridge-builder and promoter of dialogue across cultural and spiritual lines.
This year’s podcast episode was recorded on the 3rd of June and featured contributions from UPF and a representative of the Bhakti Marga community. UPF Portugal was represented by Mrs. Paula Berto, the Bhakti Marga community was represented by Mrs. Isabel Soares, and the moderator representing the Odivelas Municipality was Dr. Janina Ossmane. The 40-minute conversation centred on the theme "Women and Religion: The Role of Women in Religions". The aim was to create a space for collective reflection on the roles and challenges faced by women within different religious traditions, while also drawing attention to the presence and importance of women in interfaith discourse and advancing the conversation around gender equality.
Throughout the discussion, both participants explored how their communities understand and articulate the role of women in faith and religious life. Their responses revealed a strong alignment in values, underscoring that what unites communities is far greater than what sets them apart.
The podcast also examined questions regarding gender-based distinctions in rituals, responsibilities, or leadership roles. Both speakers provided context on how such distinctions are viewed within their traditions and explained the religious functions women may hold. Other topics included whether specific forms of worship are reserved for women, the place of motherhood and family life within religious contexts, and how each community addresses gender equality and the progress made in recent years.
UPF’s contribution was consistent with its longstanding engagement in the promotion of interreligious harmony and its role as a unifying voice in diverse social settings. The dialogue offered an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and reaffirm shared values that support a more inclusive and cohesive society.
