On Saturday, November 23rd, 2024, at the organisation’s Peace Embassy, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Portugal hosted the event “Gathering with Ambassadors for Peace”, under the theme “Nomination and Recognition of Ambassadors for Peace”. Religious leaders, academics, members from different municipalities, and civil society representatives gathered together to confirm their commitment to peace building and to strengthen partnerships for a more harmonious world.
The programme was characterised by a welcoming and sharing atmosphere and a spirit of friendship and unity. Hosted by Ms. Paula Berto, UPF Portugal Board Secretary, the opening included a video introduction to UPF’s mission and values.
In his speech, Dr. Sérgio Vieira, President of UPF Portugal, gave an explanation of the 5 Principles of the Universal Peace Federation, emphasising the importance of interfaith dialogue and the integration of multiple societal sectors to foster a culture of peace. He also highlighted the importance of collective efforts and working together during these times of global challenges.
Connected to the event virtually, Brazilian Federal Deputy Ms. Carla Zambelli shared her experience as an Ambassador for Peace in her homeland. Inspired by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon (also known as Mother Moon) co-founder of UPF, Ms. Zambelli encouraged the Portuguese Ambassadors for Peace to follow UPF’s constructive global philosophy of peace.
Succeeding was a break, with refreshments and an exhibition of works in origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. This was followed with a video of UPF’s recent activities and the founders’ biographies.
The second part started with a rendition by all of the powerful Peace Song “One Day:Koolulam”. Next, Dr. Sérgio Vieira shared a presentation about the “Ambassadors for Peace Project”, explaining the main significance of the three new categories for Ambassadors for Peace Nominations, i.e., Ambassadors for Peace: Effective Participants; Ambassadors for Peace: Interventive Participants; Ambassadors for Peace: Supporting Participants.
Then came the highlight of the event - the Recognition, Nomination and Awarding of New Ambassadors for Peace.
One of the most emotional moments was the acknowledgment of long-standing Ambassadors for Peace, as dedicated and outstanding partners and Honorees of a special certificate in three fields:
1) The Elders and Emeritus:
- 1 Posthumous Tribute
- 5 In-Person and Remote Recognitions
2) The 10 Most Dedicated and Active Ambassadors
3) The 3 Ambassadors from UPF affiliated partner, the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP)
Last, but a key moment of the event, was the nomination of 8 New Ambassadors for Peace 2024 in recognition of their noble work for promoting unity and peace.
The event concluded with a video showcasing the vision of UPF’s founders and the Ambassadors for Peace’ role throughout the global peace summits. Another video was shown announcing the coming inauguration of the Cheon Won Gung Palace in Korea, to be held in the next Summit for Peace on 13th April, 2025.
The ceremony ended with announcements, a group photo, and heartfelt remarks that left all participants inspired and united in their shared mission.
